Who are Safer?
Safer is a local charity which supports victims of domestic abuse in the Bailiwick of Guernsey.
What do they do?
It provides the Guernsey Women’s Refuge which accommodated 23 women and 19 of their children in 2017. Whilst the layout of the Refuge prevents them from taking men and older boys, they have an arrangement with the Guernsey Housing Association to accommodate male victims seeking refuge.
All other services are available to any gender. In 2017 the outreach service supported 128 medium risk victims referred by the Police and 173 high risk victims had an independent domestic violence advisor (IDVA) appointed.
Some of the biggest victims of domestic abuse are the smallest and in 2017 they helped 98 high risk children and young people through their children and young person’s independent domestic violence advisors (KIDVA) service.
Safer also tries to raise the profile of domestic abuse in the Bailiwick and provides training for over 100 people a year. Safer is grateful to GSYRadio for helping them reach victims of domestic abuse and reassure them that they do not have to go through this alone but can call 01481 721999 on their helpline for support.
